More than ever, the world needs innovative scientists to help further research, explore the universe, and build upon humankind’s knowledge of life. Today, your kids can get involved in science and support their love for exploration and inquiry. In addition, science and experimentation can also lead to improving your child’s creativity, patience, emotional expression, and learning capabilities. By using a mindful approach to science, your kids may not only find a new passion, but they will learn to express themselves and understand themselves in creative and exciting scientific ways.
Step One: Get Them the Right Equipment
It’s difficult to support your child’s love of science and channel creativity without the right equipment and materials. Children love to express themselves, explore the world around them, and experiment by themselves. By giving them their own scientific gear, you may be surprised to see how fast your child learns and discovers new knowledge about themselves and their world.
Step Two: Do Fun (and Safe) Science Experiments Together
While children love to explore on their own, parents should make it a priority to participate in their child’s scientific exploration alongside them. By helping your child with their experiments, giving them one-on-one attention, learning of their actions and motivations, and practicing mindfulness while experimenting, you will be able to spend quality time with them and learn about the world together.
There are plenty of fun—and safe—experiments you can do from the comforts of your own home. All you need is some creativity, a bit of time, and the materials needed. Create your own ‘tornado in a bottle’ or make gooey slime. Have fun witnessing the frothing peak of your own baking soda volcano or make delicious homemade ice cream in a bag. Your child will love any of these fun, easy options!
Step Three: Read Books
Children are like sponges, eager to soak up any new knowledge. They have so many unanswered questions about life and how the world works. One of the best ways to fuel this love for learning is by reading books with them. There are many kid-friendly science-fiction novels, scientific encyclopedias, or educational picture books that you can either purchase or borrow from your local library. Books take your kids on adventures that they may otherwise not be able to experience outside of the pages of a good book, and they help your children learn more about the emotions and actions around them.
Support your child’s love for science by providing the right scientific equipment, time, and books for them to explore the wonders of the world. By helping them learn about their creativity, their strengths, their passions, and their emotions, children can use science as a way to understand themselves and the world that they live in.
